Mrs. Anne Longfellow Pierce, who has been for so long the well known occupant of the Longfellow house, died Thursday night. She was a sister of the Poet Longfellow and was ninety years and ten months old. Her husband was George W. Pierce, a graduate of Bowdoin college in the same class with Longfellow. He was a lawyer of great promise but died at the early age of twenty-nine years, three years after his marriage.
Mrs. Pierce was born in the house in which she died. It was built by her grandfather, General Wadsworth and was the first brick house in Portland. Mrs. Pierce lived there all her life, except three years of her brief married life. Some years ago she gave a deed of the house to the Maine Historical society, possession to be given to the society on her death.
Mrs. Pierce was a lady of the old school and was always gracious and queenly in her intercourse with her friends and with all who called on her during the declining years of her life.
Mrs. Pierce leaves a brother, Mr. Alexander W. Longfellow, who lives on South street, in this city, at the age of 87 years, and one sister, Mrs. James Greenleaf, who lives in Cambridge, at the age of 85 years.
