Herbert Doran Matthews, 88 years, passed peacefully away on Saturday, March 13, 2010 in the Uniontown Hospital.

Herbert Doran Matthews was born on November 10, 1921 in Leisenring, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

"Herb" was a 1940 graduate of the now former South Union High School and a Veteran of World War II who served honorably in the United States Army 738th(M) Tank Battalion (SP) as a Tank Gunner during the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member for 84 years of Third Presbyterian Church in Uniontown and the John Knox Class for 50 years.

He was a member and Past Master of the German Grange.

He was one of the Founding Members of the General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103 in Hopwood, Pa.

Mr. Matthews began his career as a Newspaper Carrier and later worked in the Circulation Department of the Herald Standard Newspaper Company for 50 years.

"Herb" loved going to Blue Grass Festivals where he would sing and dance and enjoy life. "Herb" was often a Master of Ceremonies at many of these festivals.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John William Matthews and Sabina Mitchell Matthews; a brother, Clarence Matthews; two sisters, Rosalene Keys and Zelda Hensel; and a great-grandson, Homer Workman.

Surviving are his loving wife Mary Ross Matthews; three sons: Alan Matthews and Keith Matthews both of Uniontown and Kenneth Matthews and wife Debbie, McClellandtown, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren: Garrity Lee Matthews of Florida, Tereva Matthews of Indiana state, Jeremy Taylor Matthews of McClellandtown, Lisa Marie McShane and her husband Patrick McShane Sr. of New Salem, Pennsylvania and Lori Beth Workman and her husband Eric Workman Sr. of Uniontown; five great grandchildren: Kayla Marie, Patrick Jr., Eric Jr., Brian, Timothy Jr.; a sister, Mildred Saye of Midland, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Friends will be received in the JEROME W. SHELL FUNERAL HOME at 164 South Mount Vernon Avenue, Uniontown, Pennsylvania on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m.

Visitation will continue on Thursday, March 18, 2010 in the THIRD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 425 Union Street Uniontown, from 10 until 11 a.m. Services will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Chris Enoch and the Reverend William D. Rodahaver officiating.

Interment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded at graveside by the General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103, Hopwood, Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Third Presbyterian Church, 425 Union Street, Uniontown, PA 15401.
