JAS. H. FONDA DIES AT 75; ILL SEVERAL WEKKS
James Henry Fonda, 75, a North Platte resident for more than fifty years, passed away about 3:30 this morning in his home, 521 West Third street after a several weeks illness. Death was caused from fumes pneumonia. Upon returning from Omaha several weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Fonda were gassed from furnace fumes. Mrs. Fonda is able to be up and is much improved. Mr. Fonda was much improved until he took ill with fumes pneumonia several days ago and had been in a serious condition for several days. Mr. Fonda was born September 17,1858, in Oswego, N.Y. He acquired his early education in the district schools of Illinois, being about nine years of age when his parents moved to that state. His early life was spent on a farm, but at the age of seventeen he entered the service of he Union Pacific company as a freight handler at Council Bluffs, Iowa. In March 1877 he came to North Platte and soon afterward became a laborer in the shops. In 1878 he was made fireman and was promoted to engineer on July 1, 1882. In that year he joined Divsion No. 88 B. of L. E. and until the time of his death was an active member in that order. For thirty-nine years he ran an engine in the freight service, until 1898 he had a passenger run until 1927. He was pensioned from the Union Pacific service in January 1927. Mr. Fonda was also a member of B.P. 0. of Elks lodge No. 985. Besides his widow, Mrs. Nellie L. Fonda, four children survive: three sons—Frank N. of Pocatello, Ida., Arthur H. of Salt Lake City, and Dr. James E. of Winnetka, Ill., and one daughter— Mrs. Blanche M. Tarkington of Wallace. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 pm. at the home at, 521 West Third street with the Elks in charge. Interment will be made in the North Platte cemetery with the B. of L. E. in charge of services at the cemetery.
