Mrs. Angela E. Darby, 90, died Friday, Oct. 9, at Arden Hill Life Care Center, Goshen, N.Y.

Mrs. Darby, a longtime resident of Dawsonville, was born in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Michael E. Elberth, a successful merchant who owned retail department stores, and the late Gertrude [Elizabeth] Behr Elberth.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Alma Elberth Sims.

She was educated at Mount de Sales Academy and graduated from the College of Notre Dame. She did graduate work at Johns Hopkins University and received an LL.B. degree from National University Law School, which became part of George Washington University Law School.

She came to Montgomery County in 1929 and married Lawrence A. Darby Jr., of Dawsonville. They were also classmates at National University Law School. Mr. Darby, whose family had resided in Montgomery County since the early 18th century, was an officer of Suburban Title Company and died in 1979. After law school during the Depresssion, Mrs. Darby became a public school teacher in the Montgomery County Public School System. She began teaching at Poolesville High School, but spent most of her career as a Latin and English teacher at Bethesda Chevy Chase Senior High School. She also spent a number of years in educational administration as Director of the Career Recognition Program for the Montgomery County Public School System.

Mrs. Darby was active in community affairs and a member of St. Mary's parish in Barnesville. She was for many years president of the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association and Prefect of the St. Mary's Parish Sodality.

She is survived by her only son, Lawrence A. Darby III, New York, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Abigail Wadsworth Darby and Lawrence A. Darby IV

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. at the Hilton Funeral Home, 2211 Beallsville Road, Barnesville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.
