THE PARIS NEWS December, 1987:

Cedric Townsend, former Lamar County Judge and more recently Paris Municipal Judge, died Saturday, December 19, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, December 21, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Peel and the Rev. Ray Starnes officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The body will be at the church one hour before services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Paris.

Townsend began serving two terms as district clerk of Lamar County in 1937. He passed the Texas State Bar Examination three years later and was assistant county attorney from 1942 to 1944. Beginning in 1945, he served two terms as county judge and retired four years later to begin a private law practice. He also served as a municipal court judge for 35 years. Townsend was a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the 31st president of the Paris Founders Lions Club and served on the board of trustees of the Paris Independent School District. He was elected president of the PISD board in 1959. He was a member of the Paris Masonic Lodge, the Golden Rule Sunday School Class of First UNited Methodist Church, the Texas Bar Association and the Lamar County Bar Association. He was a former director of the Community Chest of Lamar County.

Townsend was born February 23, 1909, in Chicota, a son of C. H. 'Bud' Townsend and Ora White. He married Dorothy Humphrey on June 21, 1933, in Blossom. She preceded him in death on July 21, 1968. He married Wilma Ryan on February 8, 1969. He attended public schools in Chicota and studied at Paris Junior College and East Texas State University. He taught school at Slate Shoales, Direct, Spring Hill and Chicota.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Townsend, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Casey Townsend of Austin; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Bess Price of Paris; three grandchildren, Justin, Blair and Trent Townsend of Austin; three daughters by marriage, Mrs. William (Carolyn) Haskell, Jr. of Austin, Mrs. Bill (Patricia) Keesee of Linden and Mrs. Susan Marquess of Dallas; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren by marriage; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1911 Fairfax.
