Genevieve "Fannie", age 92, passed away on Friday at the Columbia Healthcare Center in Wyocena. She was born, along with a twin brother, to John H. & Isabelle (McDonald) Achterberg as the seventh child. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially at Christmas time. Sometimes cookies stashed away would be found months later to be enjoyed. She loved spending time with family and friends. Genevieve liked to watch people and activities but not necessarily to join in. She also enjoyed listening to country music and reading. Genevieve worked at Lake Windsor Country Club, Holiday Inn East and O'Malley's Farm Café. She retired in 1990. She grew up in Pardeeville, and was united in marriage to Marvin Bortz on Sept. 21, 1935, and started a family. They moved to Morrisonville, in 1945. They divorced in 1969. Genevieve continued to live in Morrisonville until 2003. She is survived by her three sons, Harold (Glenda) of North Carolina, Norman (Beverly) of Reedsburg, Loren (Marilu) of Pardeeville; two daughters, Bonnie (Peter) Nelson of Morrisonville and Tammy (Patrick) Freeman of Rio; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, M. Wayne Bortz; grandson, Steven J. Nelson; her parents; three brothers, Ralph, Eugene (her twin) and Donald; four sisters, Cairnrona Achterberg, Olwen Horton, Thelma McDonald and Blodwen Dolgner; her former husband; and several other family and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday at United in Christ Lutheran Church in Morrisonville, with Pastor Brent Walsworth presiding. The family would like to thank the Columbia Healthcare Center and staff on Willow Court for their kind and compassionate care. Also special thanks to Dr. Amy Strain for help and concern given to Genevieve and her family. Smith Funeral Home, Pardeeville, WI assisted with arrangements.
