DELAND - Maitland Brooks Knox, 78, of Village Green Road, died Jan. 22, 2005, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Mr. Knox retired in 1983 as president of First National Bank of New Smyrna Beach. Born in Alexandria, La., he moved to DeLand from New Smyrna Beach in 1996. He entered the U.S. Navy at age 16, and served honorably in the submarine service in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Mr. Knox worked his way through Stonier Graduate School at Rutgers University, earning a degree in banking and finance. He taught banking at several schools, frequently lectured for the American Bankers Association, and gave expert-witness testimony before the U.S. Congress regarding policies relating to small business. While working in New Smyrna Beach, Mr. Knox was active in many community projects, including the Rotary Club Foreign Exchange Student Program and the annual distribution of toys and New Testaments to underprivileged children each Christmas. He enjoyed traveling, and he visited all 50 states and numerous foreign countries. In the years after his retirement, Mr. Knox devoted himself to the service of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, laboring tirelessly in the mailroom at Bible Baptist Church in DeLand shipping Bibles to men and women in Third World nations. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Wanda; two sons, James and his wife, Lillian, of DeLand, and David and his fiancee, Annie Day, of West Orange, N.J.; two daughters, Diana Knox O'Brien and her husband, Dennis, of Apopka, and Linda Knox Bradley and her husband, Donal, of Edgewater; and six grandchildren, Israel, Tabitha, Elinor, Sally, Madeline and Amelia. Memorial donations may be made to Bible Baptist Church, 872 Glenwood Road, DeLand FL 32720. Carpenter Curry was in charge.
