Born in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, on September 18, 1827. Attended Phillips Academy and graduated from Yale in 1847. Admitted to practice in New Hampshire in 1850. Came to Minnesota in 1853, served as a member of the Territorial Legislature (1856 - 1857) and as a Regent of the University of Minnesota (1860-1861). Chaired the House and then the Senate committees on the judiciary in 1863 and 1864, respectively. Elected an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, he took office on January 10, 1865, and remained on the court by virtue of successive reelections until his death on November 8, 1887.
