"He was born in Stonyford, Glenn [sic] County, and as a small child his parents moved to Paradise when it was a wilderness. His father donated property to the Paradise district for the school site and had the school bell imported from France. He also owned and operated the first grocery business in Paradise.
"When Mr. Melvin completed his schooling, he went into the mining business and worked at that and carpentry until he retired on Boucher Street.
"Survivors include five children, Lloyd, Robert G., Arthur E., George E. Melvin and Mrs. Helen Reynolds, all of Chico; and a brother Alfred Melvin of San Francisco, as well as six grandchildren.
"Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Brusie Funeral Home and interment will be in the family plot of Paradise Cemetery."
