George Paul Beckett, 84, Ellensburg, died Sunday at Royal Vista Care Center.
He was born in Sheldon, Wisc., on Aug. 27, 1903, a son of George W. and Emma (Crick) Beckett. He received his elementary education in Ontario, Wisc., and moved with his family to Tacoma in 1918.
Following graduation from Stadium High School in Tacoma, he had a variety of jobs, including steel millworker, wood finisher and thresher.
In 1925, he was employed as radio operator and purser on freight and passenger ships, sailing to South America, Canada, Alaska, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Philippine Islands, Borneo and Dutch East Indies ports.
He left the sea in 1936 for a position as radio operator with the U.S. Bureau of Air Commerce (later the Civil Aviation Administration and Federal Aviation Administration) in Wyoming and Montana.
He left for Alaska in 1939 and held similar positions. He spent 10 years as radio inspector and liaison officer in Anchorage, Yakataga, Nome and Petersburg. He left Alaska in 1950 for Billings and Great Falls, Mont., and was later transferred to Silver Lake, Wash. When that station closed in 1954, he moved to Ellensburg.
He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1964 and established a self-owned repair shop. He operated the Merry Bee Repair Shop from his home until 1882, when he retired to enjoy woodworking and rock hunting.
He and Mary Zuger were married in Nome, Alaska, on Aug. 21, 1945.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Mary, include one son, Dennis Beckett, Ellensburg; two daughters, Joan Jeske, Ellensberg, and Cheryl Probasco, Yakima; five grandchildren, and two sisters, Hazel Smith, Tacoma, and Doris Sorter, Seattle.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Beckett in 1954 and James Beckett in 1980.
