The Wellington Leader March 11, 1971

J. E. Puryear, 85, retired Wellington farmer and former member of the State Legislature from this district, died in Hill Country Memorial Hospital near Kerrville at 5:28 a.m. Saturday, March 6.

Since August, Mr. Puryear had been staying with his son, E. C. Puryear, at Kerrville. He suffered a stroke on Jan. 30, but was able to leave the hospital and go home; then on Monday, March 1, he was stricken again. During much of the 67 years he lived in Collingsworth County, Mr. Puryears home was on his farm a few miles east of Wellington, and it was here that his reputation as an outstanding farmer and livestock man was built. Believing that fruit should be a major crop in this area, he operated a fruit orchard until he retired, when he and Mrs. Puryear moved to the family home in Wellington. John Edward Puryear was a native Texan, born in Hunt County Oct. 28, 1885. Both parents died when he was a small child, and he was reared by his grandparents. Mr. Puryear was graduated from East Texas State University with a B.A. degree in 1903, when he was only 17 years of age. A classmate was the late Sam Raburn, whom he greatly admired throughout the latter's long and distinguished political career. Later that same year, Mr. Puryear moved to Collingsworth County and began his farming operations. He was married to Miss Eva Camp on Oct. 26, 1904 in Wellington. She preceded him in death Nov. 26, 1963. Mr. Puryear served in the 43rd Texas Legislature during 1933 and 1934. To the end of his long life he remained interested in the events of the world as well as those which occurred in his own community, and among his own friends and associates. He helped with many enterprises that were for the improvement of this area, especially in agriculture and in the schools of the county. Surviving Mr. Puryear are his son and daughter, E. C. Puryear of Kerrville, and Mrs. Margaret P. Peters of Dallas; two granddaughters, Mrs. Carole Young of Cheney, WA, and Mrs. Dianne Duddington of Fort Worth. There are five great-grandchildren.
