Transferring Thomas to a 5 times great grandson, Thomas Potter is also my 5 times great grandfather, through his daughter Rachel. Alison Land. 3-10-2020

The marriage I see between Thomas Potter and Susannah Ann Shockley is on 5 Jan 1801 in Franklin County, Virginia. I am a decedent of Rachel Potter and Joseph Weathers. Rachel was born in 1779 in Henry County, Kentucky according to some and she was married to Joseph in 1801 in Kentucky. That would make Thomas Potter and Susannah Shockley getting married the same year as his daughter Rachel.

There is a marriage between a Thomas Potter and Diana Alsup on 31 Jul 1763 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland Co., VA. Perhaps this is the mother of Thomas' children?

Suggested edit: In addition to the Diana Alsop and Susannah unknown, notes previously submitted, there is a 3rd marriage for Thomas Potter b. 1746.

MARRIAGE - A Thomas Potter married Anne (possibly McGee) 25 Sep 1808 in Barren Co, KY. She was born 1792 and died 22 Oct 1826. This is likely the Ann mentioned in Thomas Potter's will.

Suggested edit: The marriage between Thomas Potter b.1746 to a Susannah Schockley is 1801 is cause for concern in naming her as the mother of Thomas' children who were all born prior to this marriage date.

The documentation that does exists supports the following:

BIRTH - Thomas was born May 26,1746 in Henry County, Virginia. Proving his parentage is somewhat of a mystery, although it is believed his parents were English.

MARRIAGE - Diana Alsop (the daughter of John Alsop) is likely Thomas' first wife. She was born 1745 in Goochland County, VA. Thomas and Diana were married July 31, 1763, in Goochland County, VA. She may have died in 1769.

CHILDREN OF THOMAS AND DIANA - John born 1764 likely VA, died unknown; Lewis born 1766 Pittsylvania County, VA, died 1845 in KY; Thomas born 1767 likely VA, died unknown; and Hugh Ryan born 1769 Pittsylvania County, VA, died unknown.

MARRIAGE - Thomas likely then married a Susannah, last name unknown. This may be Susannah Potter who died August 9, 1806 in Warren County, KY and who may have been born in 1748. We do not believe this is Susannah Shockley whom a Thomas Potter married in 1801 in South Carolina.

CHILDREN OF THOMAS AND SUSANNAH - Rueben born 1770 Pittsylvania Co, VA, died unknown; William Amos born 1772 Henry County, VA, died 1831 Warren County, KY; Benjamin born 1773 likely VA, died unknown; Joshua born 1776 Henry County, VA, died 1840 Charlton County, MO; Elisha born 1778 Pittsylvania County, VA, died 1827 Crawford County, IN; Rachel born 1780 VA, died 1852 Orange County, IN; Betsey born 1780 VA, died 1821 Howard County, MO; Nancy born 1782 VA, died 1844 Warren County, KY; Frederick born 1785 VA, died 1868 Warren County, KY; and John born 1787 VA, died unknown.
