The son of George C. Bailey and Frances Thompson Bailey, he grew up on a farm where Montcalm, West Virginia now stands.
Brother of Jonathan S. Bailey, Council Walker Bailey, Nancy D. Bailey Walker, Burrell B. Bailey, Charlotte Temple (Bailey) Bailey, and Catherine T. (Bailey) Bailey.

The farm where he raised a family adjoined the one of his father; the real estate value in 1860 was 1500 dollars (MCC).
He may have been a constable at some period circa 1850.
He was described by former generations as being tall and red-haired.
Married to Mary Fain, he fathered four children. She is named on the death records of her sons. A marriage entry for 2 September 1858 is included in marriage records for Pike county, Kentucky.

Thompson was a CSA veteran.
His name is in the online roster for the 151st Militia Regiment, Company D (Capt., John E. Hall) and listed as a Private. Eight others of his relations by the same surname are in this listing.

The following, from:

Thompson survived the war, with his life thoroughly changed and having lost several members of his family. His real estate value was nearly halved in 1870, to 900 dollars. This census has his household as #84, two removed from that of Addison and Octavia Bailey.
His age often fluctuates on these records.
[A note by Kyle McCormick, historian, indicated that the family never knew what happened to Thompson's brother, Council, who was killed in action at Richmond, Virginia.]
His brother Jonathan died in a POW camp in Maryland.
George, Burrel, Thompson and Council are mentioned in
Robert Williams' writing, as well as brief mentions of their mother and sisters. (Robert H. Williams, an Englishman, who wrote of his experiences in America).
Thompson and Burrel gave oath and bond for the administration of their father's will, on behalf of their mother.
The marriage to Isabel Elizabeth was in the late autumn following the death of his father, on 27 November 1866, in Mercer county, performed by Joseph Wright.
Daughters Mary Virginia and Arminta were of this marriage; he was informant for birth of Mary.
Thompson outlived Elizabeth by just two months.
