Sam Garness, 92, died Oct. 6, 1997, at the Lutheran Home in Caledonia, where he had been a resident for several years because of health problems.
He was born July 29, 1905, to Casper and Sophia Thoreson Raanrud Garness in Black Hammer Township. He grew up and attended school in the area known as Rooster Valley. He and Ellen Tweeten married and were later divorced. He farmed a few years and later worked as a farmhand and carpenter in the Spring Grove and Mabel areas.
He is survived by a brother, Ernest of Rushford; a sister, Myrtle of Spring Grove; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
A memorial service was held at the Roble Funeral Chapel of Spring Grove, on Friday, Oct. 10, 1997, with the Rev. William Horn officiating. Interment of the cremains will be at a later date at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Spring Grove.
