On Friday, August 23, 2019, the Maine State Police Motorcycle detail was in Belfast to honor and remember one of their own.

Trooper Fred A. Foster was killed on Northport Avenue in Belfast on the evening of Sunday, August 30, 1925. As he patrolled the roads between Belfast and Camden, Trooper Foster struck a hay wagon as it was being pulled down the roadway after dark. The local news paper articles from that time indicated the wagon was being pulled with no visible lighting to the rear, which was considered to be a major contributing factor in the accident.

Trooper Foster was one of three Maine State Troopers to die in the line of duty as a result of motorcycle accidents in 1924 and 1925 respectively.

This year the Maine State Police reinstituted its motorcycle detail. One of the unit's goals from the start was to travel to the location of each of the three accident scenes and take time to remember and honor the Officers who were amounst the first in the Maine State Police History to die in the line of duty.

One member of the unit (Trooper Tom Fiske) mentioned to the small group of officers present at the "Foot of the Square" (Begining of Northport Ave) and their family members, that Trooper Foster was just 25 years old at the time of his death. He had just been hired as a trooper and had no wife or kids. Trooper Fiske explained there was a good chance, considering his death was 94 years ago there is no one alive today who remembers him. Trooper Fiske told the small crowd it was our responsibility to make sure Trooper Foster is never forgotten.
