Gladys H. Engebretson, 88

Gladys H. Stensland was born July 25, 1909, to Lars and Lavina Stensland. She grew up in attended school in the Garretson area, graduating from Garretson High School in 1926. Gladys attended college at Augustana College and received her teaching certificate. She taught school for two years before she married Rudolph (Rudy) Engebretson on October 8, 1932, at Garretson. They lived and farmed the Engebretson Homestead until 1975 when they moved into Garretson.

Gladys was active in Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She passed away at Palisade Manor on August 9, 1997.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Rudy of Garretson; six sons: Gordon, Charles, Paul and Larry, all of Garretson, Alan of San Diego, California, and Randy of Bakersfield, California; two sisters, Luella Klovstad and Veronica Lorenzen both of Sioux Falls, 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, two sisters and one great grandson.

Services were held Tuesday, August 12, 1997, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson with the Rev. Gary VanHunnik officiating. Paul Berg was organist with Deanna Hentges as soloist.

Casket bearers were Brian Engebretson, Kenneth Engebretson, Tony Engebretson, Keith Engebretson, Bret Engebretson, Ted Engebretson and Chris Engebretson.

Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Garretson. Minnehaha Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
