Corporal Joseph Greer, the Co. D. Color Bearer of the 26th Michigan, was one of Captain Lafayette Church's best friends. Born May 30, 1826, he had enlisted from Newark, Gratiot County, at the age of 36. He was listed as wounded at Mine Run, Virginia on November 29, 1863, where he lost his right arm and was later discharged at Alexandria on February 15, 1864. Joseph and his wife, Lydia Hawkins, had nine children. He attended many regimental reunions in his later years including one in 1883. His grave is listed in the Fritz Cemetery in Gratiot County. (James Greer served in Co. H. and would be wounded at Spotsylvania.)

26th Michigan service included: Camp Jackson, Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, & Mine Run
