Augustus was the son of John and Sally Millard.

Augustus W.H. Millard was born May 29, 1820 in Washington Co. Ohio. He was named after a Dr. Augustus William Harvey who saved the life of his father, John Millard, while working on boats going up & down the Mississippi River. Augustus married Achsah Barstow April 26, 1842 in Washington Co. Ohio. The Millard family left Ohio in the mid 1850's for Clarke Co. Iowa. Augustus was involved with the underground railroad thru the Civil War era. In his later years he was a Seventh Day Adventist minister. He died very suddenly of apoplexy on Dec. 1, 1883 after moving from his farm in Liberty Twp. to his property in Osceola.

The 1850 census revealed Augustus was a farmer, their real estate value was $600 and they were living in Ward, Hocking, Ohio. Household members: Augustus W. H. Millard (30), Achsah (29), Charles C. (8), Mary E. (6), Orin M. (3) and Frances C. (1).

The 1860 census revealed their real estate value was $1600, their personal property value was $520 and they were living in Liberty, Clarke County, Iowa. Household members: A. W. H. Millard (40), A. (40), C. C. (18), M. E. (16) and O. (13).

The 1870 census revealed Augustus was a lumber dealer, their real estate value was $3600, their personal property value was $2000. They were living in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. Augustus and Achsah were born in Ohio and their daughter was born in Iowa. Household members: Augustus Millard (50), Achsah (49) and Ida (7).
