Farewell, dear; But not forever,
There will be a glorious dawn;
We shall meet to part - no never!
On the Resurrection morn.

Tho' thy darling form lies sleeping
In the cold and silent tomb,
Thou shall have a glorious waking
When the Blessed Lord doth come

He loved her

Maria Louisa was born in Weston Connecticut, part of the large Curtis family that lived on the North Rd in what is now Easton. She lived with her sister Mary Lockwood for a time in Wilton, most likely because of illness in the family and when Mary passed away she migrated to Wayne Michigan where some of her brothers were living and there she met Stephen Decautur Smith. Stephen was a boot and shoemaker and serving in the Civil War. After Stephen was mustered out of the Military they married on April 14, 1864. Sometime between 1880 and 1892 they migrated west to Thurston County Washington settling in Olympia. Although they never had any children, they were actively involved in their Church where Stephen was affectionately known as "Uncle Steve" and Maria was involved in the East Side Ladies and Pastor's Union, on the visiting committee, and serving as Treasurer in 1898. Stephen left a legacy to this Church they loved the funds of which he stipulated be used to buy a pipe organ which was to be known as the "Smith Memorial Organ" and upon the organ be placed a brass plate inscribed with the words "Stephen Decautur Smith and Maria Louisa Smith Memorial Organ." The Organ was finally installed in 1924 under the pastorship of A.H.Lathrop --The Church is the First United Methodist Church of Olympia. Unfortunately the Church was destroyed by the 1949 earthquake and the organ is no longer in existence but there are photographs of it and they are part of the Historical Archives of the present day FUMC of Olympia rebuilt after the quake.

Written for Maria Louisa Curtis on the occasion of her 179th birthday. Maria is my 4th great Aunt
