Sig V. Smith Died May 5th
Sigfred "Sig" V. Smith, 96, Montana resident since 1901, died Saturday, May 5, 1979, in a Great Falls hospital. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Cemetery with the Geraldine Masonic Lodge officiating.
Mr. Smith was born March 31, 1883, in Forest Lake, Minnesota, and was educated there. He came to Montana in July 1901 from Forest Lake and first was employed by the Benton Sheep Co., one of the largest ranch operations in this area. He later rode on the Shonkin Roundup until it disbanded in 1909 when settlers began coming into the area. He was the last survivor of the Shonkin Roundup Association. He was a member of the Pilgrim Masonic Lodge in Geraldine and Scottish Rite in Great Falls.
In 1910 Sig homesteaded on land in the Clear Lake area and we believe still owns the land. He married Jennie J. Johnson Jan. 8, 1917 at the home of her parents near Butte. The couple were on the homestead until they bought a home in Great Falls in 1947, and they retired from the farm in 1952. For years they spent winters in Chula Vista, Calif., but regarded themselves as Montanans.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jennie, in Great Falls; nephews, Gordon Smith of Ocean Grove, Calif., John Woodcock of Great Falls, and Ben Woodcock of Fort Benton; and nieces, Mrs. Betty Willits of Fort Benton, Mrs. Seena Walker and Mrs. Olga Dawson of Great Falls.
