Mattes, Clara (21 APR 1877 – 22 APR 1936)

Clara Mattes, daughter of Carl and Louisa Best, was born in the town of Schleswig, Manitowoc Co., Wis., on April 21st, 1877.
She stayed at home with her parents until Jan. 10, 1897 when she was married to Philip Mattes and together they came to the Town of Reseburg (Clark Co., Wis.), which was then a primitive farming community, to operate a country store among the pioneers of that day. There, through her cheerful and generous disposition, she won a large circle of friends. She was always ready to lend a helping hand to the sick and the poor among those pioneers. Immediately on her arrival in this community she affiliated her self with St. Paul's Lutheran Congregation and reared her family in that faith, also joined the Ladies Aid of this congregation and was a very devoted member.
Later they settled on their farm.
She began to ail with heart trouble several years ago, which gradually got worse. The last six months she failed rapidly until Wednesday morning, April 22nd, 1936 she passed away quietly at the age of 59 years, 1 day.
She leaves to mourn her untimely departure, her husband, five children, Hugo of Pennsylvania, Harold of Reseburg, Norma (Mrs. Floyd Brandt) of Withee, Philip of the town of Mead and Arthur at home. Two children preceded her in death in infancy. She also leaves to mourn three grandchildren, one sister Louisa (Mrs. Wm. Voss) of Kiel; two brothers, Carl Best of Kiel, Louis Best of Reseburg.

Pallbearers were: Bob Telford, Geo. Hansen, Ed Maricle, bill Darge, Frank Mortimer and Herman Buss.
