The son of German immigrants named Johann "Adam" Elbert and Anna Marie Ilsabein "Annie" Geiselman, "John" was baptized Johann Heinrich Herman Mathias Elbert on 30 Jun 1867 at Salem Lutheran Church in Black Jack, St. Louis County, Missouri. His sponsors were Mathia Rudolf, Hermann Camp and Heinrich Twellmann.

John married Anna Maria Wilhelmine "Annie" Wolff on 26 May 1895 at Salem Lutheran Church. He worked as a farmer in Black Jack, and they were the parents of 9 children.

John died of stomach cancer at Halls Ferry Memorial. At the time of his death, he was 78 years, 5 months and 2 days old.

He was survived by 5 sons; and 2 daughters.

In addition to his mother and father, John was preceded in death by his wife, Annie.

Funeral services were conducted on 30 Oct 1945. Diedrich Funeral Home on Halls Ferry Road in north St. Louis County was in charge of arrangements.

He was buried next to his wife, Annie, who passed away in 1915.
