He enlisted on 19 August 1861 at the age of 19. Archie was severely wounded at the battle of "Burned Chimneys" also known as Lee's Mills, Virginia on April 16, 1862. He was wounded in the thigh, with the bullet passing out through his groin, incapacitating him for further active service. He spent more than a year in hospitals.

He was assigned to the Invalid Corps on Jul 27 1863. This was a group started for soldiers who were not able to continue on active duty, but were able to perform some kinds of functions instead of just discharging them. - From: Tom Ledoux

Married Harriet Elizabeth "Hattie" Bruce on 29 June 1863 at Guliford, Vermont. He was living at Chiucopee Mass. at the time and is listed as a US soldier - She lived at Newfame at the time. (She was born on 21 January1845 d: 5 July 1915 of brights disease. she married a second time to Charles Wesley Priest [son of Ethan Priest and Hannah Crowley] on 24 September 1874)[she is the daughter of Orison Bruce and Hannah Charter]

1850 US Census Lists him living at Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont, with Abigail Persons (b:~1800 in Mass) and Fanny Persons (b:~ 1842 in Vermont
1860 US Census lists him living at Rutland, Vermont, alone with Lucy Persons (b:~1848 in Vermont)
