Jesse liked to fish and hunt. Hester crocheted, quilted and enjoyed sewing garments for her children. They were members of the Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church where he was director of music for many years. They sang duets and Jesse sang solos. She played the piano. Both died in an automobile accident at Happy Valley Dr., Walker Co., GA -- Hester died upon impact and Jesse died two days later. Their funeral services were at the same time on Sunday June 29, 1970. The following poem was written by Jack H. Pinion, a friend, and it says exactly what my grandfather was like--there was nothing like his sweet smile:

THE SMILE OF A FRIEND

To some belong wealth and fame,
Still others claim a famous name,
But one I've known for quite a while,
Can only boast of a winning smile.

What makes a smile so warm so true,
That lifts you up when you're blue,
Chases the gloom from the room,
What makes this smile ever bloom.

A smile is the glow of an inward joy,
Planted and cultivated since only a boy,
The ripened fruit of a disciplined life,
The outcropping of a Peace with God.

Surrounded and loved by young and old,
Friends unnumbered we are told,
Honored by his own, cherished each day,
Children, grandchildren along the way.

About us we see on every hand,
A building you built, and helped to plan,
Indebted we are, and ever shall be,
For the tears and sweat, and labor we see.

Each year this day, for a little while,
Your birthday we note another mile,
Crowned by your smile, our favorite, and yes,
God bless you good, our beloved "Uncle Jesse".
