In 1853 a group of Dutch people came to Smith County from South Carolina, making their first settlement at the present site of Trenton. The party was comprised of the following heads of families: William Swetenburg, Ed Roberts, Summers Roberts, Alf Summers, Forrest Derick, Josie Caughman, Daniel Derrick, Daniel Caughman, Jack and Martin Swiggart.
They were all members of the Lutheran Church, and brought with them a young preacher, Rev. Waldrop, who was unmarried. The families all settled in the same locality and built their homes and a church; all completed about the same time.
Mrs. Lizzie Wooley, of Mize and Noah Swiggart, of Trenton are the only living members of the original immigration. Mrs. Wooley was only five weeks old when the party left the old home, the trip having been deferred until after her arrival.

Swigert, John M. 76 years, 10 months and 17 days old died in Smith County MS. He was born in Lexington County SC, January 29, 1808 and died December 10, 1884. On February 25, 1829 he married Anna Barbara Derrick. His wife died May 15, 1862. They were the parents of 10 children but only two survived the parents. Burial was in the cemetery of Providence Lutheran Church.
