On October 24, 1864, Asa V. Churchill of Traverse City was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. He had enlisted with the "Lake Shore Tigers" in Co. A. of the 26th Michigan on August 14, 1862, at the age of 30. He survived the war and was discharged at Harford, Connecticut on July 5, 1865, from the 2nd Battalion Veteran Reserve Corps. He died in 1889 at Bremer County, Iowa. Also, several members of the Churchill family served in the 7th Michigan Infantry and Norval Churchill served in the 1st Michigan Cavalry. His grave is in Antrim County, Michigan.

26th Michigan service included: Camp Jackson, Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, & Petersburg
