PITTSBURG — Garnett E. Bloomcamp, 90, of Pittsburg, Kansas, died at 2:08 a.m., Sunday, March 7, 2010 in the Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
He was born April 17, 1919 at Cole Camp, Missouri, a son of John H. and Anna (Hashagen) Bloomcamp. The family lived at rural Farlington, Kansas before moving to the Hepler, Kansas area. He graduated from Helper High School in 1937 and Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University, in 1941. He received an MS in Business Administration from PSU in 1950.
While serving as Principal in Edna, Kansas in 1941, he was inducted into the US Army. He received a Bronze Star while serving with General Kruger and the Sixth Army in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines from January 26, 1942 until June 23, 1945.
He married Ruth A. Attkisson on June 1, 1947 in the United Methodist Church in Hepler. She survives of the home.
He was Principal at Hepler High School from 1950 until 1959, and then Director of Financial Aid at Pittsburg State University before retiring in 1984.
He was a professional musician and earned his way through Pitt State by playing in bands. After serving in the Army, he continued to play the piano with bands in Springfield and Joplin, Missouri and in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg. He was a member of the Missouri and Kansas Musician's Union; the Kansas Association of Financial Aid Administrators; the first president of the Hepler Alumni Association; a member of the former Hepler Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Pittsburg State University Alumni Association.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the home, are a daughter and son in law, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by brothers Leonard, Cletus, and Victor Bloomcamp and sisters Gertrude, Beulah, and Edna Bloomcamp and Viola Sloan.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Revs. Jim Akins and Kathleen Owsley officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Fort Scott National Cemetery.
