Gordon Fletcher of Braintree, formerly of Quincy, in his 90th year, died Sunday March 7, 2010 at South Shore Hospital, Weymouth, following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of 62 years to the late Doris (MacLeod) Fletcher, who passed away on April 11, 2005. Born in Quincy on August 29, 1920, he was the only son of the late J. Irving Fletcher, a Methodist Minister, and the late Catherine (MacPherson) Fletcher. He was raised in Quincy and graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1937. After graduating, he began working at Grossmans in Quincy and Braintree. Around the same time, he joined the National Guard and was soon activated to serve his country during WWII. During his time in the Army, Gordon served overseas in the South Pacific, Americal Division, and in Guadalcanal and the Fiji Islands before being honorably discharged on Nov 5, 1945. Upon returning to Quincy, he resumed his work at Grossmans, and began taking night courses at Northeastern University, and earned his Bachelors degree in Business Administration. After college, and concurrent with his career at Grossmans, Mr. Fletcher started his own wallpaper hanging and painting business in the mid 1950s, a trade he has since passed along to his sons and grandsons who continue on in the business. Finally, after 43 years, he retired from Grossmans in 1982. He was an active, life-long member of Fort Square Presbyterian Church in Quincy. Although he enjoyed his time spent travelling to new places, camping, taking photographs and collecting stamps and coins, his happiest times were those spent with his loving and devoted family. Beloved father of Donald G. Fletcher and his wife Jodi of Abington, Richard A. Fletcher and his wife Gail of Putney, VT, and Lynne A. Fletcher of The Villages, FL. Cherished grandfather of Jocelyn, Katie, Abigail, Corey, Kyle and Ian. He was the brother of the late Bette Peters.
