"Lawton L. Surles, well known local marine engineer, was found dead in his cell at the city hall Monday night. It appears that Surles, who had been drinking heavily for some time past, had the notion that some one was trying to kill him. He sought the police for protection, and at his request was placed in the city jail Sunday night. He remained in jail Monday, and still insisted that assassins were after him.

At about 9 o'clock Chief W. H. Minton and Officer E. T. Hamill inspected the cells, and then found Surles' body with a blanket tied tightly around his neck. Dr. E. W. Warren, city physician, was called, and he stated that death had been caused by strangulation.

Justice P. B. Huff called a jury of inquest, and a verdict of suicide was soon released.

The deceased is survived by his wife and three children: three brothers, Austin and Walter Surles of Palatka, and R. A. Surles of Jacksonville; one sister, Mrs. S. S. Tolar of Miami, and his Mother, Mrs. M. L. Surles of Palatka.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 11:00 o'clock from the Davis Chapel, with Rev. G. W. Rosenberry, pastor of St. James Methodist Church, officiating. The remains were then taken to Welaka for interment." Times Herald, Friday, 28 Mar 1930.
