Obituary for Willie Asa Paul, Jr.
LABORER DIED OF BROKEN NECK

A construction worker killed Monday in west Champaign was not wearing a hard hat when he was struck in the head by heavy wooden roof trusses, but results of an autopsy indicate a hard hat might have been of little help.

Willie Asa Paul Jr., 39 of Mahomet was killed about 11 a.m. at the site on Mattis Avenue where the C.A. Petry and Sons Construction Co is building a lumber yard for Thompson Lumber Company.

He died of injuries he sustained when several of the 60 foot trusses, prefabricated triangular rafter sections, fell on him as they were being unloaded from a truck with two fork lifts.

Ken Fletcher, a sheriff's investigator, said Mr. Paul was not wearing a hard hat when the accident occurred.

Mr. Paul sustained an injury to the head, but Tuesday morning Champaign County Coroner Thomas Henderson said the head injury apparently was not the cause of death.

Henderson said the autopsy showed Mr. Paul apparently died of a broken neck inflicted by the weight of the falling trusses.

Fletcher said witnesses to the accident said the two fork lifts were operating in tandem to remove a number of the trusses from the truck.

Apparently one of the trusses started to slip from the forklift, according to Fletcher, and Mr. Paul moved forward to secure it. "When he did" Fletcher said, "four or five of them came down on top of him."

Funeral services for Mr. Paul will be at 2:30 p.m Thursday at Blair Funeral Home, Mahomet, with the Rev. John Kelley officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Paul was born Aug. 24, 1938, at Mahomet, a son of Willie A. and Charlotte F. Crowley Paul. He died April 11, 1958 at Fisher. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Charles W. and Rick L., both at home; two brothers, Kenneth of Monticello and Keith of Mahomet; and six sisters, Laverne Mendoza of Springfield, Betty Martin of Danville, Wanda Mahin of Theodosa, MO., Donna Poundstone of Bement, Nancy Shott of Champaign and Dorothy Logan of Mahomet.

He was preceded in death by twin daughters.

Mr. Paul was employed by C.A. Petry for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Cornbelt Fire Department for 18 years and labor Local no.703. He attended Mahomet-Seymour Schools.
