Obituary from Korey Jackson:
"Bro. Smith was born in Crawford County, Illinois, on the 1st of March 1834, and came to this county with his widowed mother in the year 1850, and in 1853 professed religion and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, under the ministerial labors of Rev. John Grundy, and on the 18th of October, 1854, was married to Miss Elizabeth Cory."
He served in the 93rd Illinois Regiment joining on Aug. 12, 1862 & was promoted to corporal. He was slightly wounded in battle at Vicksburg, Miss. on May 22, 1863 and was killed in battle on Nov. 25, 1863 at Mission Ridge, Tenn.
The widow, Elizabeth, and their four living children moved to Conde, South Dakota in 1883 and homesteaded there.
The children of James Miles & Elizabeth Lucina (Corey) Smith were:
1. John Packard Smith (1859- 1950)
2. Mary Elizabeth "Nancy" Smith (1863-1951) m. John Emerson Sears.
3. Ellen M. Smith (1860-1862)
4. Elijah Hamilton Smith (1856-1935)
5. Eshter A. "Etta" Smith (1861-1916) m. Allen Seward
