John Carl (Hap) Gylland, 64, 11824 Point Creek Road, Newton, Wis., died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 22, 1999. at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born May 14, 1934, in Superior, the son of the late Carl and Edna Flaten Gylland.

He was a 1952 graduate of Superior East High School and also obtained an associate degree in tool engineering. On Oct. 16, 1953, he was married to Barbara Gamble. He worked as a railroad telegrapher in Superior after his
marriage. From 1955 to 1958, he served with the U.S. Army Signal Corp. including a tour in Greenland. In 1996 he retired from the Foster Needle Co., Manitowoc, where he worked for 39 years. During his retirement years, he enjoyed golfing and genealogy. He was a past master of the Manitowoc Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; one son, Jeffrey (Patti) Gylland, Cedarburg; four daughters, Susan (Jerome) Klann, Franklin; Andrea (Stanley) Smith, Eagan, Minn.; Julie (Steven) Walber, Kiel, and Paula Gylland, Franklin, and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sunday at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, Kiel, with the Rev. Erick Adams, pastor of Kiel Alliance Church, officiating. Cremation has taken place. A memorial has been established for the American Red Cross International Response Fund ' Kosovo, 1816 Washington St., Manitowoc, WI 54220.
