Mary Ann Blackburn

Mrs. Mary Ann Blackburn, widow of Hiram Blackburn, late of East St. Clair Township, deceased, died at her home in Fishertown, Sunday evening, the 16th inst., at 8:30 o'clock, in the 85th year of her age.

Mrs. Blackburn was the last survivor of a family of nine children whose parents, Allen and Margaret Conley, lived near Schellsburg, this county.

She was the sister of the late Capt. Isaiah Conley, who died a few years ago and who was well known as a merchant of Schellsburg and Associate Judge of the county courts.

Her husband, above named, and who died three years ago, was a man of very extended acquaintance in the county from his long time service as a surveyor and for two terms as County Commissioner.

Mrs. Blackburn was the mother of nine children, two of whom died in childhood, and the seven living all reside within a comparatively short distance from their early home, Elias, W. Dorsey, Margaretta and Mrs. Smith Hamaker, living at Fishertown; Mrs. A.H. Whetstone at Everett, Allen C., at Bedford and Dr. Edwin C. at Lock Haven.

Mrs. Blackburn was a faithful and consistent member of the Society of Friends and took an active interest in both church and Sabbath School work until the date of her last sickness.

She was a woman of superior intelligence, strong character and pleasing personality. She had a remarkably clear memory, a keen sense of humor and a well informed mind.

The predominating qualities of her nature were probably cheerfulness and benevolence. Gloom and selfishness seemed to play no part in her life's conduct, and young and old alike, who had the privlege to know her, will cherish through the coming years pleasant memories of her helpfulness in lightening life's burdens and shedding sunshine in their path.

The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon from her late home and was conducted by Rev. Dr. O. Edward Janney of Baltimore, assisted by Rev. Hermann of the Reformed Church of Cessna charge, both of whom were personal friends of the deceased and her family.

Interment was made in the Union Cemetery near the village.
