On February 18, 2010, Opal Shaw left her earthly home and joined her loved ones beyond the gates of Heaven. The first to greet her was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Standing with Him, with joyous hearts, were her husband, her son and her oldest daughter.
Opal was born in Wagoner County, Oklahoma on August 4, 1916 to Jesse B. Isola and Magdaline Eveline (Key) Stimson.
As a young girl, Opal attended the Church of God in Murphy, Oklahoma. At the age of 9, she gave her heart to God and claimed Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of her life. Opal devoted her life to serving the Lord and never missed a chance to invite others to give their hearts to God and receive the gift of His love.
On November 4, 1933, in Hominy, Osage County, Oklahoma, Opal married Kenneth G. "Fid" Shaw. Opal and Fid spent their courtship attending community socials and church functions. The family followed the oilfield and lived in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Over the years, Opal worked wherever the couple lived. She worked in local grocery stores, and also sold Stanley products, Tupperware and Avon.
Her loved ones will miss dropping by to visit with Opal. Family and friends couldn't wait to get there because they knew that there would be a huge kettle of chicken-n-dumplings simmering on the stove. And, the deliciously inviting aroma of fresh-baked applesauce cake filled the air. And, it was no secret, that Grandma always had a stash of every grandkid's favorite treat, Ding Dongs, tucked away in the cupboard.
Opal spent many years living in Fairview, Oklahoma and was a faithful member of the Assembly of God Church. In 1995 she moved to Foyil, Oklahoma where she lived until moving to the Claremore Nursing Home in 2009.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Patricia Hicks and husband Benny of Chelsea, and her daughter-in-law, Reba Shaw, wife of Delbert (deceased) of Claremore; grandchildren, Rhonda Olson, Francesca Shaw, Kerry Hicks, Donnell Turnham, and Chandra Robertson; nine great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving her are two brothers, Jack of Bartlesville and Daris of Foyil; and two sisters Mary Lou Ridenour of Bernice, and Martha Dake of Foyil.
Preceding her in her heavenly flight were her husband, Kenneth, her son Delbert, her daughter, Jessie Turnham, her oldest grandson, Kenneth Hicks, and a great-grandson, Jarek Turnham; her parents, two brothers, Claude and Chester; and three sisters Faye Hall, Ortha Stimson and Loretta Stimson.
Visitation will be on Monday, February 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Rice Funeral Service in Claremore.
On Tuesday, February 23rd, at 2:00 p.m., a service celebrating Opal's life will be held at Foyil United Methodist Church, 17288 E. Fourth, Foyil, Oklahoma. Rev. David Mewbourne of Claremore Assembly of God will be officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, in Fairview, Oklahoma, with a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24th with Rev. David White , formerly of Fairview, officiating.
