Caleb Francis was Civil War veteran. He received a severe groin injury from a musket ball during an infantry charge while fighting for the Union Army at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. Later he worked for the railroad as an engineer. Circumstances concerning his death were related by his grandson Wayne Burton Francis: ""One night, Caleb had to work as the caboose signal man. The weather was terrible and it rained all night. He stayed at his post during this storm but, came home in the morning cold and soaked through and though. His wife stated, "Caleb that could be enough to kill you!" He soon became ill and died 30 days later from resulting complications. The actual lantern he used that night still exists and is in the custody of his Great Great Grandson Ted Jackson of Clawson, Michigan.
