JACK WAYNE CAPAROON, SR.

LAMAR — Jack Wayne Caparoon, 91, Lamar, died Friday, February 26, 2010.

Mr. Caparoon was born Sept. 1, 1918, in Bonner Spring, Kan., to George and Ida (Coop) Caparoon.

He and five of his siblings were reared by his grandmother, Mary Ellen Coop, after their mother died shortly after he was born.

After his mother died the family moved to Junction City. Later Mr. Caparoon and three of his siblings were placed in an orphanage in Abilene. They were there about a year when their Grandmother Coop came and got them. All the children were reunited in Downs by their grandmother.

He attended the public school in Downs, Kan.

Mr. Caparoon graduated from Downs High School in 1936.

He joined the Navy in 1942, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and served on the Destroyer USS Bennion. He was discharged Oct. 26, 1945, with the rank of Seaman 1st Class SV-6.

Returning home to Kansas City he joined the Kansas City Fire Department where he rose to the rank of Chief. While with the fire department he attended Penn College and got his degree to teach. He was also an arson investigator for insurance companies. After retirement he was hired as fire inspector and became Chief of Fire Prevention from 1967 to 1973. He was the Missouri State Fire Marshall from 1973 to 1979.

He married Evelyn Rose Jamison on Nov. 13, 1937, in Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Wayne Caparoon, Jr., Centerview, and James Leroy Caparoon, Sheldon; a nephew, Kenneth Watts, Downs, Kan.; a niece, Mary Ann Grabau, Independence, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Joel; an infant sister, Beryl; sisters Mary, Avis, Ruth and Ann, and brothers George, James, Alfred and Leroy.

Graveside services were held Saturday at the Downs (Kan.) Cemetery.

Minister David Hardy officiated.

Arrangements were under the direction of Domoney Funeral Home in Downs, Kan. Soloist was Connie Hardy, who sang "Abide With Me" and "Taps". Honorary pallbearers were Jack Wayne Caparoon, Jr., James Caparoon, Jimmy Lee Caparoon, John Caparoon, Jerry Knouf and Kenneth Watts.

Military honors were conducted by Downs VFW Post No. 1366. The Downs Fire Department Honor Guard was also present.

Sheldon, Missouri--Jack W. Caparoon Sr. passed away Friday, February 26, 2010.

He was born to George and Ida (Coop) Caparoon on September 27, 1918.

Jack and 5 of his siblings were raised by his grandmother after their mother died shortly after Jack was born.

He married Evelyn Rose Jamison on November 13, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri. To this union three sons were born- Jack Wayne Jr., James Leroy and Joel Dean.

After the bombing of Pearl harbor, Jack joined he Navy in 1942 serving on the Destroyer USS Bennion. He was discharged October 26, 1945 with the rank of Seaman 1st class SV-6.

Returning home to Kansas City, Jack joined the Kansas City Fire Department. There he rose to the rank of Chief. In 1972, Jack became the Missouri State Fire Marshal until his retirement.

While with the Fire Department he attended Penn College and received his degree to teach.

Jack was also an Arson Investigator for insurance companies.

Jack and Evelyn enjoyed collecting coins and dolls.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn in 2007, son Joel Dean in 1995, infant sister Beryl, sisters-Mary, Avis, Ruth, Ann and brothers George, James, Alfred, and Leroy.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the Downs Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Downs Fire Department.

Please link Jack to his father's memorial. His father is George Wesley Caparoon #99327152. I'm trying to locate all 10 of the children's graves so the family could be linked - still looking for their mother too, Ida who died in 1918 in Bonner Springs.
