Emil Ernest Benoit, 85, of Albany died Wednesday at his home.

Mr. Benoit was born in Gentilly, Minn., to Joseph Ephraim and Anna Marie (LeBlanc) Benoit. He moved to Oregon City at age 5. After high school he worked five years as a carpenter's assistant at Hawley Paper Co. of Oregon City.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and served 54 months at sea in the Pacific Theater and the Middle East during and after World War II. He was discharged as a carpenter's mate first class in February 1947.

Mr. Benoit logged and was a tree topper out of Eureka, Calif.

He met Delta Mae Hogue at Humboldt State College in Arcata, Calif., where they were married on June 27, 1953. They moved to Albany in 1957.

Mr. Benoit was a millwright for Willamette Industries in Albany, and he retired in 1981. He enjoyed elk and deer hunting, fishing for salmon on the Alsea River and traveling throughout the world with his wife, who was a photographer.

Mrs. Benoit died in June 1993.

Mr. Benoit is survived by sisters Cecile Converse of Grand Coulee, Wash., Irene Walstrom of Milwaukie, Madilyn Mitchell of Woodburn and Lauret Mitchell of Oregon City. Brothers Henry and Paul preceded him in death.

Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at AAsum Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Betts officiating. Burial will follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens.
