Charles Francis Waldron one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Putnam county died at his home in Welaka last Saturday afternoon of heart failure. His funeral was held from his late home at 10 o'clock on Monday morning, and the interment was in the Welaka cemetery. The obsequies were largely attended by the people of Welaka and surrounding country as well as friends from all parts of the Fruitland peninsula. The G.A.R. post of Pomona, of which deceased was a charter member, attended in a body and members of that veterans organization acted as pallbearers. The officiating clergyman was Rev. Patrick Barry, rector of St. Monica's Roman Catholic Church in this city, of which church deceased was a faithful communicant.
Mr. Waldron is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. The latter, Mrs. Holmes Erwin of Pomona, being at present in Cuba, was the only member of the immediate family not present.
Mr. Waldron had been ill for upwards of two months. Two weeks ago he was compelled to take to his bed. Last Saturday afternoon death claimed him.
Frank Waldron was one of the pioneers of the peninsula, coming to that section soon after the close of the civil war. He was a man who took an active interest in everything calculated to benefit the county and was known and respected in all sections. Mr. Waldron was a native of Ohio, a veteran Federal soldier, and it was his ambition to spread the glories of Florida's climate among all his old comrades in the north and induce them to come here and pass their remaining days. Many an old Federal soldier now living in Putnam county is here today because Frank Waldron was a frequent contributor to the newspapers of the county, usually written under the sobriquet of "Buckeye."
Now that he is gone there will be tears for his memory, for he was a genial spirit who made friends always and enemies, never. (Palatka News Obituary dtd Friday, 1 Apr 1904.)
