Samuel Addison Sellers was the 6th of 8 children born to John SELLERS and Catherine BROWN.
In 1835, Samuel's father, John, bought nearly 500 acres a mile outside of present-day Churchville in neighboring Augusta County, Virginia, and soon after removed the family there. In the early 1850s, Samuel returned to Rockingham County where he lived and worked.
Samuel and his brother, James, both enlisted into the Civil War in April 1863 in the 10th Virginia Volunteers Infantry, Company I, also known as the "Riverton Invincibles". Samuel enlisted with the rank of 1st Sargeant and quickly rose to Lieutenant. At the time of his death just 13 months later, he had been voted "Captain" by his men.
Samuel Addison Sellers was killed on May 5, 1864, during the Battle of the Wilderness. His body was brought back to Augusta County and interred near where his father would be buried just 8 years later in Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
