“Know Your Hospital”
Miss Annie Lee Allnutt, Dental Hygienist
Until the Dental Clinic was moved to a separate building, Miss ANNIE LEE ALLNUTT had her headquarters in that section of Gorgas that is now Sterile Supply. The move was made in 1951 so that most of her 23 years here Miss Allnutt spent in the Hospital proper and seems a part of it to the many hundreds of patients who have heard her say “Open wider, please,” or who have marvelled at her ability to understand the grunts that pass for words with a mouth full of dental equipment.

Born in Dawsonville, Maryland, Miss Allnutt received her early schooling in that community and then went to Western Maryland College. Transferring to Georgetown University School of Oral Hygiene she graduated with a degree as Dental Hygienist. For a time she worked in the schools of the District of Columbia and in a private office — leaving this to come to the Canal Zone in 1936.

Until the Nurse’s Quarters were abandoned as living quarters, Miss Allnutt made her home there. Now she lives in Diablo.

Her outside interests include swimming and golf although she has neglected the latter for the former since there isn’t time for both. Her other recreation in Bridge. Although she says her Spanish is confined to dental Spanish, Miss Allnutt has traveled all over the country from the Volcan to the San Blas Islands without any difficulty.

She likes the country and has enjoyed living here, has, because on June 3, just one day over the 23 years of her arrival she will make her home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on the outskirts of Washington. Although she says the Allnutt clan is fairly plentiful in that section and she will be living near relatives, she will miss her many friends on the Isthmus. By the same token she will be missed in her profession, in her church for which she has been an ardent worker and by the many friends she has made during her life on the Isthmus.
