Religious Leader. Originally a Quaker farmer, John Woolley converted to Mormonism in 1837 and moved to the Utah Territory during the 1840s. His father Edwin became a close friend as well as business manager for Brigham Young. John held many roles in Utah civil government including constable, justice of the peace, deputy sheriff, marshal and county commissioner. A bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1853-1881, Woolley is best known as the father of Mormon fundamentalism, considered by fundamentalists to be a prophet and president of the priesthood.
