Son of Sion Parsons Steed and Martha "Patsy" Steed.

Thomas enlisted as a Private in Company H, 18th Texas Infantry (Ochiltree's) at Jefferson, TX on June 24, 1862. He was promoted to to 3rd Sergeant prior to November 1862. He was reduced to ranks on an undisclosed date. Thomas was captured at Fort De Russy, Louisiana on March 14, 1864 and confined at New Orleans, Louisiana on March 20, 1864. He was exchanged at Red River Landing on July 22, 1864.
