Daughter of Lorin Calvin Woolley and Sarah Ann Roberts


Gwendolyn R Woolley of the Centerville pioneer family passed away February 7, 1994 in northern California. She had been with the Arthur Coombs family, a nephew.
She was born October 2, 1896 in Centerville, Utah to Lorin Calvin and Sarah Ann Roberts Woolley .
Aunt Gwen had her early schooling in Centerville and graduated from the old Salt Lake High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah and her masters degree from Columbia University in New York. The Emeritus Club of the U of U gave her a Merit of Honor Award. All of her adult life was spent as a classroom teacher beginning in 1915 in Meadow an Gandy, Utah. She also taught during those early years in Idaho. Her first teaching in Nevada was at Moapa where she taught for three years. Ajo, Arizona was her next assignment lasting four years. In 1936, while the Hoover Dam was under construction, she went to Las Vegas to accept a teaching position and served in that position until her retirement in 1966. After retirement, she taught four more years at a small private school for troubled girls. The Clark County, Nevada School District honored Gwen singularly by naming a new elementary school ''The Gwendolyn R Woolley School.''.
She was a lifelong active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in all of its auxiliary organizations at one time or another. She served a church mission in Southern California from 1921 to 1923.
Aunt Gwen loved to travel, and she was active in several clubs and organizations throughout her life including the Las Vegas chapter of D.U.P. On her 90th birthday, the governor of Nevada declared Gwendolyn Woolley Day in the state of Nevada, and she was honored at a reception. She was frequently welcoming family member as they passed through Las Vegas.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Ivy Walker Woolley and a host of nieces, nephews, and their extended families. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held in Las Vegas Friday, Feb. 11th, an additional service will be held at Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary, 727 No. 400 East, Bountiful at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14th, where friends may calla t 10 a.m. Interment Centerville City Cemetery.
