Adam was born in 1792 into a large family in Berkley County, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). At about age 2 (1794), his family moved to Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Kentucky had just become America's 15th state two years earlier. Because Indians were still a force to be feared in Kentucky, these families built cabins near Fort Hardin (present day Hardinsburg). At the first warning that Indians were afoot, the pioneers would scurry to take refuge within the walls of the fort. Otherwise they lived on their individual lot, growing corn and vegetables for the family, perhaps with a horse and cow grazing on the nearby grasslands. As fears of Indian attack waned, they began work on establishing homes along the Sugar Tree Run (creek). Adam would spend the rest of his life in Kentucky.

Adam fought with Andrew Jackson, America's 7th President, in the War of 1812 at the Battle of New Orleans. His father, Adam Barr, Sr., had fought in the Revolutionary War.

In 1817, Adam married Hannah Beauchamp and they started a large family together of at least eleven children, including at least seven sons (Jereboam, Adam III, John, Hamilton, William, Daniel, and Harrison) and at least four daughters (Mary, Sally, Nancy, and Letitia). See the discussion below on the 1840 and 1850 censuses for more details on their family.

Adam's will is provided in the photos in original cursive writing that is extremely difficult to read. A text translation is provided below. His will was written on January 28, 1849 and proved on May 21, 1849. In it he mentions his wife Hannah, his daughters Mary and Sally, and his sons Jereboam, William, John, Nelson, and Hamilton. His youngest children are referred to but not specifically mentioned (Daniel, Harrison, Nancy, and Letitia). He died at age 56 and appears to have provided well for his family as his will leaves large amounts of money and land to his wife and his children.

After Adam died, His wife Hanna would later move to La Harpe, Illinois, where some of her children had moved. She died there in 1875, 26 years after her husband Adam died.
