When Conrad Sanderson Rice was born on December 23, 1839, in Perry, Pennsylvania, his father, Samuel, was 46 and his mother, Mary, was 43. He married Sarah Ellen Hartman in 1861. They had nine children in 18 years. He died on April 5, 1911, in Saville, Pennsylvania, at the age of 71, and was buried at Buffalo Cemetery.
Conrad S. Rice enlisted in Company F, Pennsylvania 104th Infantry Regiment on 09 Mar 1865, at the rank of Private. He mustered out on 25 Aug 1865, at Portsmouth, VA. In his later life, first he, then his widow, Sarah, received a pension for his five months of service.

Conrad S. Rice, aged 71, a well-known farmer of Saville township, died at his home in Saville Wednesday of last week... His death was sudden and was caused by heart trouble, following an attack of pleurisy. He was a member of the Reformed church. The funeral was held on Saturday of last week, the services being conducted by the Rev. Dr. J. W. Meminger, of Lancaster city, and the Rev. P. H. Hoover, of Blain. Interment was made in the Buffalo cemetery.
