" Tom"
James Thomas Cheney passed on peacefully. He was born in Denver, Colorado.

Tom graduated from high school in Steamboat Springs, where he played football, basketball and was in track. He graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, earning his engineering degree.

His greatest stories were of his military experiences. He was a WWII B-17 pilot and was decorated with the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal after being shot down over Holland and was captured and detained as a P.O.W.

He later came to Fresno and was with Valley Foundry and Machine Works as Chief Engineer and Sales Manager moving later into the position as Vice President of Industrial Sales and Engineering until the company was sold. He loved, respected and was devoted to the Peters Family.

He served as a CIF football official and referee handling the valley's high school games. He was a Toastmaster, a member of East Fresno Rotary, President of the Fresno Republican Assembly in 1954, an associate professor at Fresno State and a deputy with the Fresno County Sheriff's Posse. He was an amateur magician, an accomplished organist, an avid snow and water skier and golfer.

He and Nella were members of Belmont Country Club and he was President for two terms. One of his greatest passions was raising and showing Arabian horses. He was also a Registered AHSA Horseshow Judge.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Clovis.

He lived a great life, loved his family, friends and his country. He had a mischievous smile and wink. He was loved and will be missed!

Tom is preceded in death by his wife and life long partner Nella M. Cheney; his son John C. Pylant; his sister Bonnie Herrera; and his parents Anna and Vernon Cheney.

He is survived by his daughter Karen Getty-Hopkins; son-in- law Ed Hopkins; granddaughter Kathy Ellis and her husband Bob; his great grandson Tom Ellis; and his sister Verna Middleton.

A Celebration of Tom's life with military honors will be held at Chapel of the Light on Friday, March 12, 2010, at 2:00 p.m.
