US Army General. He graduated from West Point in 1883 and was assigned to the Cavalry. In 1889 he was named Professor of Military Science at Iowa State University, where he served until 1893. During the Spanish-American War he served in Cuba, and after assignments in the US he returned there in 1906. Read served on the General Staff in Washington, DC before being transferred to the Philippines in 1910. From 1912 to 1913 he served on the US-Mexico border, and he graduated from the Army War College in 1914. At the start of World War I he was promoted to Brigadier General and commander of the 15th Cavalry Division. In April 1918, now a Major General, he was assigned to command the 30th Infantry Division, and later that year he was named to command II Corps, which he led in the St. Mihiel and Ypres offensives. After the armistice, Read commanded the US Embarkation Center, responsible for planning the return to the US of all personnel and materiel. In 1920 Read returned to the US as commander of the 42nd Infantry Division, afterwards commanding V Corps, which he led until his 1924 retirement. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal and the British Order of the Bath. He was the father of George Windle Read, Jr. (1900-1974), an Army officer who commanded Armor units during World War II and retired as a Lieutenant General
