Kay was born in Kahlotus, WA, to Jack and Catherine Swart, both deceased. She died peacefully at Swedish Hospital on March 7, 2001. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Peggy Abersfeller of Seattle; one brother, Robert E. Swart of San Leandro, CA; and several nieces and nephews. She was a longtime employee of Washington Mutual Bank and Senator Henry M. Jackson in Washington, D.C.
