US Army Brigadier General. He graduated from the University of Michigan (1895) and the University of Michigan Law School (1896). He joined the Army in 1898 as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery. He served in Alaska during the Spanish-American War and on the China Relief Expedition, and was Honor Graduate of his Artillery School class (1903). He graduated from the Army Staff College (1905) and the Army War College (1911), and served on the Mexican border during the Villa Expedition. In addition to his Artillery assignments, Spaulding was a historian and author, and was posted as an Instructor to several Army schools. During World War I he was promoted to Brigadier General as Assistant Commandant of the Artillery School, and he later and commanded the 161st Artillery Brigade. After the war he was an Instructor at the War College and a Professor at Harvard University. He retired in 1939, but was recalled to the War College faculty during World War II, one of the few officers who served as a General in both World Wars. He retired again in 1945, and his awards included the Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit.
