Francis died in the "Line Of Duty" when the Australian Douglas C-47 #A65-2 he was on was involved in a fatal accident at Archerfield, Queensland. Only one other American soldier was on this flight: Major Eugene H. Halliwell (O-393127).
The crew of 4 plus 19 passengers were killed on this flight that took off from Brisbane-Archerfield Airport on a flight to Sydney-Mascot Airport, Australia. They crashed in a wooded area shortly after takeoff due to an engine failure.
He was originally interred in the USAF Cemetery, Ipswich, Australia and was later repatriated here on September 9, 1948.
